Brief History Of the Church

Okkur is the small village having 300 families. Westlian Methodist where working in this village in 1944 A piece of land was purchased for a school, chapel, and catalyst house. In 1947 the church was built. Managudi and Nagapatinam were the centers for the Methodist missions. In 1977 the church was destroyed by a storm. From that time the Christian people of this village made many requested to many people to construct the church for their worship. But nobody took any care regarding their request. For more than twenty-five years they have been begging and pleading with many people but all their efforts were in vain..

This village Okkur is a small village under the control of CSI Trichy –Thanjavur diocese.The diocese has provided a pastor to look offer the spiritual needs of these people.An old dilapidated building which was used as a worshiping center is of no use at present. The people around okkur form five small congrergations namely Ammapet, Navelpondi, Vaduvur, Thondrampet, Thirumangalakottai.



Description of the Congregation


Among a small number of families about 12 Christian families are living in Okkur. Similarly, other Christian families also like in near by villages as detailed below who come to Okkur for worship every week.

1. 3 families at Thirumangala Kottai 3km from Okkur
2. 10 families at Thondranpet 5km from Okkur
3. 3 families at Vadvur  4 km from Okkur

About the Peoples

These people are basically agricultural coolies who have no regular income, and even the wages that they earn one way meague to sustain them. They belong to the low caste and are looked down and treated in a humiliating manner by the high caste people. For the past few years the monsoon have failed and some of them have even taken the extreme step to commit suicide because of there utter poverty. Such is the pitiable and pathetic condition of these oppressed people.

Ministry

Every Sunday these people gather at Okkur usually under the shade of trees or by the side of the dilapidated building for worship. The local pastor or a lay preacher conducts the Holy Communion and caters to their spiritual needs. Sometimes after dark these services are conducted with the help of candle lights.

Benefits of a church

Providing a church for these people will really be a boon to them. A long cherished dream comes true. These zeal and enthusiasm for ministry can be encouraged of a church is built at the remote & rural village. Every week Sunday school can be conducted for the children of these villages and a regular school may also be thought of for these illiterate people. Medical camps and awareness programme on health and hygen can also be conducted. The social status of these people can be elevated for a better living.
